World-renowned Product management expert, Author of Escaping the Build Trap, and CEO of Product Institute and Produx Labs

Beyond the Build Trap: Becoming Product-Led

Over the past decade, companies have made strides in delivering software, and convincing their companies to turn to Product Management to get out of the Build Trap. But, still many of these companies get stuck putting these practices into place so that the entire business is working together to become product-led.

In this talk, Melissa will address what product-led really means, the barriers preventing companies from reaching this goal, and how Product Strategy and Product Operations are the key to solving these problems.

Melissa Perri is a strategic advisor, author, and board member that works with leaders at Fortune 500 companies and SAAS scale ups to enable growth through building impactful product strategies and organizations. In 2018 she wrote the industry-acclaimed book "Escaping the Build Trap". Currently, Melissa is the CEO and founder of Produx Labs, which offers e-learning for product people through Product Institute and CPO Accelerator. She is as a board advisor for Labster and Dragonboat, and a former board member of Forsta (acquired by Press Ganey in 2022). In 2019, Melissa was appointed to the faculty of Harvard Business School to teach Product Management in the MBA program. She has consulted with dozens of companies to transform their product organizations, including Insight Partners, Capital One, Vanguard, Walmart/Sam's Club. In her free time, you can find her trying to finish her house renovations before something else breaks.

Will opening AI destroy open source software?

Nobody can escape AI. It has those concerned in existential risk in a tizzy and the rest of the world working out how it will impact our jobs and businesses.  All difficult to work out without actually understanding what AI is capable of and what its impact is.

This talk will focus on:

  • What is Open Source?
  • What is AI openness?
  • What are the risks and benefits of opening up AI and equally the risks of trying to close it?
  • How is AI impacting society as a whole and in particular Open Source?
  • And where is this all going?

Amanda will draw on OpenUK’s recent research and report on AI (to be published early 2024) and the discussions at State of Open Con 24 in early February, to bring the most current thinking to the audience in a cohesive way as she considers the risk of Open in AI and the risk AI poses to Open Source.

Developer Joy – How great teams get s%*t done

Software development has become more complex over the years: Building and running a distributed architecture in the cloud, ensuring observability, discussing user experience with design and product, and keeping a healthy balance between dev speed and code quality isn’t easy. Just be agile and practice DevOps, they say.

Join Sven and learn how great software teams measure and improve their developer experience, coordinate work across teams, run autonomous but highly aligned teams, and create a healthy and joyful engineering culture. Always backed up by data (not driven) instead of opinions.

The talk will demonstrate how great teams faced development challenges, reinvented themselves, and created new ways of working to get s%*t done. Without losing sight of what makes this craft fun for engineers.

DEVOPS FOR FRONTEND & IMPLEMENTATION IN THE CHASE UK APP

DevOps is always known and common for the backend, but it is for both Frontend and Backend development, as it is a collection of sets of tools to accelerate our daily tasks and transfer everything from manual to automation.

However, DevOps for frontend projects is slightly different from Backend, and here in this talk, I will walk you through details of what DevOps means for frontend developers, and how to create a CI/CD pipeline that contributes to improving productively and releasing cycle in the Chase UK Application.

Key takeaways:
- The different types of CI/CD pipeline
- Chase project design, architecture, and modularisation
- Decouple services and reduce cycle dependencies
- Tool configuration
- Types of pipelines for integration, release, and deployment
- Application versioning and infrastructure management

Teresa is a public speaker, Google Developer Expert (GDE), mentor, and software engineer who is passionate about front-end development and Cloud technology. She has been working with many talented developers to craft various apps and projects throughout the years, and she likes to explore the world of multi-platform, the fun of continuous delivery, and seeing through the product from development to release.

REVOLUTION STARTS WITH EVOLUTION: BUILDING A BETTER FUTURE WITHOUT DITCHING YOUR EXISTING PLATFORM

Many platform engineering blog posts and tutorials focus on how to get started quickly with new tools. Yet there is a deafening silence about how to do this without leaving behind the “legacy” code and services that are currently funding the company. This means that for every new tool or new automation introduced in a unique and modern way, the team seems to be increasing their maintenance load rather than decreasing it.

Unfortunately there is no silver bullet. Migrations are hard work, and they have a long tail. But the key is defining the scope of the migration and being able to track progress while building new tools, scripts, and offerings in a more consistent and manageable way.

We can lean on tried and tested software development practices here and leverage the facade pattern where the “old” process is placed behind an API that can slowly start routing requests to a new implementation.

This talk will look at how your platform doesn’t have to be an anchor for future innovation. You can responsibly bring in innovative new tools so long as you build a bridge for existing platforms.

Abby is a Principal Engineer at Syntasso delivering Kratix, an open-source cloud-native framework for building internal platforms on Kubernetes. Her keen interest in supporting internal development comes from over a decade of experience in consulting and product delivery roles across platform, site reliability, and quality engineering.

Abby is an international keynote speaker, co-host of the #CoffeeOps London meetup, and supports SLOConf as a global captain. Outside of work, Abby spoils her pup Zino and enjoys playing team sports.

Matt Muschol

Founder Swiftix Software

HOW NOT TO INTRODUCE CODE REVIEWS

When introducing code reviews to a team that has not done code reviews before, one must resist the urge to suddenly go from no code reviews to compulsory code reviews performed by senior developers, following a pre-defined checklist, requiring multiple approvals and needing all review comments to be resolved before any code can be merged.

Whilst it may be the desired end goal to have every line of code reviewed through structured processes, the sudden change from no reviews to full scrutiny can be perceived as threatening and damage the team dynamic. This can have a potentially lasting negative impact on the team.

This talk outlines a proven six- step process for introducing code reviews to a team.

Before founding Swiftix Software, Matt Muschol was the Technical Director and Chief Technology Officer for a major Atlassian Platinum Partner. Overall he has worked in the Atlassian and DevOps space for the last fourteen years of his 25+ years career in the software industry.

Matt comes from a software development background and has a Computer Science degree from the University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg, Germany. He has worn many hats over the course of his career, including developer, software architect, team lead, development manager, technical director and CTO.

Matt is passionate about two things: 1. Striving to be the best he can be at what he does, and 2. helping others become the best version of themselves.

Matt knew that software development was going to be his passion when he taught himself BASIC from a library book in the very early 1980s and then wrote his first programme standing at one of those new "Home Computers" in a local department store. His first programme wreaked havoc and he learned lesson one: turn it off and back on again. But he was hooked for life.
