EMPOWERING THE WORLD TO DRIVE SMARTER, NOT ONLY FOR BETTER ROAD SAFETY BUT FOR IMPROVING THE WORLD AROUND US

Since the day we invented the world’s first winter tire in 1934, making the world safer has been our focus. For us, safety means more than the everyday journey on the road. We believe that we can contribute to the overall wellbeing of the planet and everything that lives on it with all our actions.

NOKIAN TYRES GREEN STEP IS
THE MOST SUSTAINABLE TIRE WE
HAVE EVER CREATED

The Nokian Tyres Green Step concept tire is a testament to our ambition of making driving more sustainable: 93% of the materials used in the tire are recycled or renewable.

We only used natural rubber, and mostly renewable oils, plasticizer, resin and processing aids. In addition, renewable materials such as natural rice husk ash silica and cellulose fiber can be found in the tire. Almost every component of the Green Step also includes some recycled materials, from carbon black derived from end-of-life tires to the butyl used in the inner surface as well as the steel in the steel belts and bead wires in the structure. The Green Step concept tire is a result of decades of innovation and accumulated expertise on sustainable tire design. With every new solution needed to create our most sustainable tire yet, we also moved one step closer to our goal: by the year 2030, 50% of all raw materials used in our tires will be recycled or renewable.

Bio-based and renewable materials

You can easily make an impact on the environment with your tire choice. Our aim is to create eco-friendlier tires by finding bio-based raw materials and replacing fossil raw materials. We will also reduce the use of harmful substances, and were the first tire manufacturer to give up the use of high aromatic oils. We are currently testing the suitability of the guayule plant to replace natural rubber and cultivate the plant near our Hakka Ring testing center in Santa Cruz de la Zarza, Spain.

Low rolling resistance cuts down harmful emissions

We design our tires to have as low rolling resistance as possible. Low rolling resistance leads directly to lower fuel consumption which, in turn, lowers carbon dioxide emissions from driving and reduces your carbon footprint. Your tire choice really matters in the big picture.

Innovating for better road safety and longer lasting tires

Double studs, Aramid Sidewalls, Dual Zone Safety concept. Tires are more than just black rubber circles and no one knows it better than we do. We innovate continuously to bring better and safer summer, winter and all-season tires for your safety. Our various solutions make sure that your tires work in all weather conditions. We also want you to be able to enjoy your tires for longer, so we strive for better durability and wear-resistance, for your sake as well as for the environment.

New test center in Spain with sustainable solutions

Our new test center Hakka Ring in Santa Cruz de la Zarza, Spain is a masterpiece of sustainable constructing.  The modern facility puts particular emphasis on water preservation, environmental diversity and protecting rare bird species.

Water is a valued resource in Spain, and we are able to recover over 80% of the water and channel it back to circulation on our wet test tracks. We built a robust, durable nesting tower for local birdlife, planted olive trees and mounted 1150 solar panels at the site to power up the facility.

Modern and sustainable production

The environmental impacts are taken into account in every step of the production process. In our factories about 25% of all used energy is produced with renewable energy sources. We are all the time finding new ways to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Production waste is utilized and scrap tires, or tires that do not meet our high standards of quality, are taken to recycling directly from production.

Our newest production facility in Dayton, Tennessee, US, represents the best in sustainable production. It has earned LEED v4 Silver certification for green building leadership, which meand that it uses less energy and water, avoids waste, has improved indoor air quality, and creates less environmental burden on the community.

Science based targets lead the way

We don't want to guess what it good for the environment, but contribute to tackling climate change by setting ambitious science-based climate targets. In May 2018, we joined the Science Based Targets initiative with the aim of setting more precise targets that are assessed and validated by an external organization.

We reached the previously set targets to reduce CO2 emissions well ahead of schedule, and the new climate goals in line with the Paris Agreement were published in May 2020. All the targets should be achieved by 2030.

We have also been included in the Dow Jones’ DJSI World sustainability index in 2020, 2019, 2018 and 2017 as well as selected for the more strictly defined DJSI Europe index, making us one the most sustainable listed companies in the world.

Guaranteeing safety with vigorous testing

We know that no amount of computer simulation can correlate real-life driving situations fully, and that is why no tire is sent to the roads without vigorous testing. Our tire testing network consists of a 700-hectare site in Ivalo, Finnish Lapland, a site near our Finnish headquarters in Nokia and a test center in Spain completed in 2021. The facilities give us the opportunity to test in all possible conditions from summer heat to freezing cold winters. This way we make sure all our winter, summer and all-season tires are prepared for every driving scenario and you can concentrate on enjoying the drive.

Solutions for EV and hybrid owners

EV and hybrid owners appreaciate tires that are safe just like other drivers. In addition, they are offered eco-friendly solutions, longer range and comfortably silent drives. EV and hybrid drivers find a large scale of products compatible with their vehicles from our winter, summer and all-season offering. On top of that, we have created a new winter tire just for you: the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10 EV is our first studded winter tire tailored to the needs of EV and hybrid owners.
